Veeco Metrology Forms New R&D Group

Veeco Metrology Group (Santa Barbara, CA) has established a new research and development group that will focus on developing new instrumentation for applications in the materials sciences, biology, polymers, magnetics, and other fields.

The new group is dedicated to innovation and basic and applied research to broaden the usage and functionality of scanning probe microscopy. It is headed by Veeco Metrology VP for R&D, Ken Babcock, and is currently comprised of 20 SPM designers, scientists, and application specialists. The group has already introduced new technologies for magnetic testing, electrical testing, and environmental controls.

Veeco Metrology Group is a division of Veeco Instruments Inc. (Plainview, NY). Veeco manufactures metrology tools for the data storage and semiconductor industries as well as research and scientific markets, and etch and deposition process equipment for the data storage industry. In October, the company announced that it had received $1.5 million in orders from semiconductor manufacturers for its chemical-mechanical polishing (CMP) metrology tool (see Veeco Receives $1.5 Million In Orders For CMP Metrology Tool).
