Asbestos testing by polarized light microscopy added to laboratory testing scope at Portland, Maine laboratory

Portland, ME (PRWEB) - Northeast Laboratory Services, Inc., a Maine based prepared culture media manufacturer and full service analytical laboratory, is proud to announce the launch of its asbestos identification section in Portland, ME. Northeast Laboratory Services, Inc. is now a Maine licensed asbestos analytical laboratory for bulk building materials; license number LB-0082.

With the use of polarized light microscopy, NEL analysts can positively identify asbestos fibers based on specific properties in which different types of asbestos exhibit. "NEL currently performs other laboratory analysis for indoor environment contaminants such as mold and radon. The addition of asbestos to our testing scope allows our customers the ease of having their analytical needs met at one laboratory," states Melissa Higgins, VP/CFO of Northeast Laboratory Services, Inc.

Asbestos is a highly effective and inexpensive fire-retardant material and insulator. Asbestos was used extensively in home construction from the early 1940's through the 1970's. It is now known that prolonged exposure to asbestos fibers can lead to lung disease. When disturbed, tiny asbestos fibers are easily inhaled, which damages lung tissue and can cause cancer.

Northeast Laboratory Services, Inc. has been specializing in laboratory testing and the manufacturing of prepared culture media for laboratory use for over 40 years. Northeast Laboratory Services, Inc. services its customers from two locations in Winslow, ME and Portland, ME.
