New Version Of SigmaScan Image Analysis Software Released

SPSS Inc. (Chicago) has released SigmaScan Pro 5.0, an automated image analysis solution for scientists, engineers, and technicians. This latest version of the image analysis software combines a new Visual Basic-based macro language with expanded image analysis and data manipulation techniques, offering scientists and engineers a complete tool to measure and analyze their scientific images.

SPSS believes that the strength of the new release lies in its flexibility. "With the new macro language, scientists and engineers not only save valuable research time but can also tailor the product to their applications," said Ken Kirsten, SigmaScan Pro product manager. "This also creates opportunities for OEM partnerships. The expanded imaging options, new worksheet and presentation tools allow scientists to be more efficient in every step from measurement to analysis through presentation of conclusions."

New and enhanced features include:

  • New automation: SigmaScan Pro's Visual Basic-based macro language automates image enhancement, measurement and analysis routines. Key features include an easy-to-use macro recorder, built-in macros for common imaging tasks, and the capability to create custom dialog boxes and menu choices. Users can also use OLE automation to access SigmaScan Pro seamlessly from other applications, or embed SigmaScan Pro scripts into custom C++ or Visual Basic programs.
  • Expanded imaging options: Images can be converted to different types, or they can be pasted or spliced from one type to another. Pixel depth of grayscale and color images can be specified.
  • New color adjustments: Hue and saturation can be altered, gamma correction value can be changed, and color values of images can be converted with a few mouse clicks. Users pinpoint needed information by separating the image's colors into three distinct images or maximizing the contrast of color images using the Histogram Stretch option.
  • New data worksheet: Apply 140 in-cell computations within the MS Excel formatted worksheet. Formatting options include changing fonts, colors, alignment, and borders of worksheet cells. Users can apply cell protection for security when sharing files.
  • Other new features include: customizable toolbars, a full-color annotations overlay, and an undo operations command.

SigmaScan Pro 5.0 can be used in a wide range of applications. The software can be used for a variety of spatial or intensity measurements, such as counting bacterial cells for growth studies, measuring the area of tumor cross-sections, characterizing microstructural flaws in steel, isolating typographic map features, or performing any other image measurement or analysis. SigmaScan Pro also offers automated test and measurement technology as well as analytical capabilities. In addition, it offers opportunities for integrated solutions with applications such as SigmaPlot, Excel, and Microsoft Word.

SigmaScan Pro 5.0 for Windows is currently shipping in North America, with a list price of $1499 for a single user license. The upgrade cost for current customers is $399. The product is expected to ship internationally in June. International pricing varies.
