New Eastman PCT Polymers Used To Produce Fibers, Yarns, And Fabrics
Eastman Chemical Co. (Kingsport, TN) has created a new family of PCT polymers, Eastman poly (cyclohexylene-dimethylene-terephthalate) polyester. The new polymers are used to produce staple fibers, filament yarns, and spunblown and meltblown fabrics for a wide range of specialty applications, including the manufacture of pillows, bed pads, carpets, and other products.
Eastman PCT polyester, now marketed as pellets to fiber manufacturers, has enhanced performance attributes over conventional PET polymers. Fiber produced from Eastman PCT polyester pellets has a soft hand and excellent recovery from compression for greater resistance to crushing and matting in products such as pillows and cushions. In pile fabrics, PCT's paint release properties increase coverage and smoother flow of the paint. The improved hydrolytic stability of the polymer is useful in reusable bed pads and autoclavable laundry bags. And the lower specific gravity of PCT is useful in creating carpets, scatter rugs, and sliver knit pile fabrics for saddle blankets.
Apparel fleece made from Eastman PCT is easier to dye, resists matting, and has low shrinkage. Its higher thermal stability gives fabrics an ironing temperature of 205°C and melting point of 290°C. Industrial applications of PCT include high-temperature filtration and insulation. The polymer is also being used in the manufacture of structural composites.
Eastman manufactures and markets plastics, chemicals, and fibers.
