The Hysitron Nanomechanical Test Instrument combines ultra-light load nanoindentation and high-resolution in situ imaging in a single system.

While viewing the material, the instruments' diamond tip can be positioned for indentation on desired topographical features. After testing images and force vs. displacement curves are available.

The lateral force transducer applies and measures load and displacement in both the Z and the X axes. With a load range of 100nN to 30mN, the product can be used for testing a variety of protective coatings. Testing of elastic modulus can be performed on materials ranging from DLC to polymers. Current applications include nanomechanical testing of thin films for disks and heads, composite materials, microelectronic integrated circuits and passivation layers.
