Modern Controls Acquires Lab Connections

Modern Controls, Inc. (Mocon; Minneapolis), will acquire Lab Connections, Inc. (Marlborough, MA), for an undisclosed sum consisting of cash and Mocon common stock. Lab Connections, a producer of interfacing instrumentation and advanced sample-preparation systems for chromatographers and spectroscopists, will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Mocon.

"Lab Connections' systems are sold into the large analytical instrument marketplace and make the combined capabilities and opportunities of the Mocon companies much more exciting," says William Mayer, CEO of Mocon.

Systems designed by Lab Connections increase chromatographic capabilities and have promise in certain life-sciences areas. Lab Connections' 1998 sales through Sept. 30, 1998, were approximately US$1.1 million.

"We have similar customers in the pharmaceutical, plastics, and gas and oil marketplaces," says Mocon President Robert Demorest. "This will provide us with additional sales opportunities and expanded services to our customers."

Mocon is a leading provider of systems and services designed to assess materials and processes. The company develops, manufactures and markets high-technology instrumentation designed to test packages and packaging materials, films, and pharmaceutical products. MOCON markets products used in research laboratories, production environments, and quality-control applications in the food, plastics, electronics, oil and gas, paints and coatings, medical, and pharmaceutical industries.
