A commercial instrument for macromolecular characterization, the DAWN DSP can be used as a detector for either continuos flow detection or as a stand-alone unit in a batch or micro-batch mode. It determines molecular weights of polymers and bipolymers from 100 to hundreds of millions of daltons, and it does not depend on standards or universal calibration. This instrument has 18 discrete photo-detectors spaced around the flow cell, ensuring that measurements be made simultaneously over a broad range of angles.
The read head is anchored directly to the laser tube and printed circuit board, and the flow cell and manifold structure are bolted directly into the read head. According to the company, this provides a solid optical bench of excellent quality. This instrument is suitable for macromolecular characterization because it combines the features of photometers, nephelometers, turbidometers and, "goniometers" into a single instrument.
