Bechtel-Led Team Wins Ineel Management And Operations Contract

The US Department of Energy has selected Bechtel B&W Idaho (BBWI) as the new management and operations contractor for the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory (Ineel). BBWI will replace Lockheed Martin Idaho Technologies Co. (Boise, ID), the current management and operating contractor at the Ineel, on September 30, 1999, with transition beginning July 1. The five-year contract is valued at $3 billion.

Bechtel National (San Francisco), a nuclear power and environmental firm, will lead the BBWI team. Other members of the team include BWX Technologies (Lynchburg, VA), a company focusing on power generation, nuclear operations, and emerging energy and environmental technologies; and the Inland Northwest Research Alliance, an alliance of seven regional universities that perform research and development for DOE, DOD, NASA, and other customers.

The BBWI team beat out Idaho International Technologies—comprised by Morrison Knudsen Corp. (MK; Boise), BNFL Inc. (Fairfax, VA), Westinghouse Government Services Group (Monroeville, PA), and Science Applications International Corp. (McLean, VA)—for the Ineel contract. Westinghouse Government Services Group, an MK subsidiary, manages operations totaling $1.8 billion on behalf of the US government. MK will continue to perform remediation and other work at seven major DOE sites, including the Advanced Mixed Waste Treatment Project at Ineel.

Ineel is a multi-program national laboratory, with a major cleanup mission, which also serves as DOE's environmental laboratory, a nuclear energy lead laboratory, and supports other national programs.
