Avago Technologies Introduces Industry's Smallest Digital Color Sensor For Portable Electronic Devices

Sensor Design-in Made Easy with Avago's Complete Development Kit

San Jose, CA - Avago Technologies introduced the industry's smallest Red, Green and Blue (RGB) digital color sensor for use in a variety of portable electronic applications. The company is a leading supplier of innovative semiconductor solutions for advanced communications, industrial and commercial applications. Avago's new ADJD-S312-CR999 color sensor is so small at 3 mm by 3 mm that 16 of them can fit on one key of a typical computer keyboard. This compact package paves the way for designers to develop smaller portable electronic devices that require color detection and measurement capabilities.

Avago's ADJD-S312-CR999 offers excellent performance in a wide variety of color sensing applications where it can be used in conjunction with a white LED for reflective color measurement. Typical applications include portable electronic laboratory instruments, industrial test equipment, and portable color readers. The small size also makes this color sensor an ideal choice for use in portable consumer devices such as mobile phones, PDAs, and hand-held games.

The ADJD-S312-CR999 color sensor provides all the necessary circuitry to directly interface with a microcontroller using a conventional two-wire serial interface. Its 3 mm by 3 mm by 0.77 mm lead-free chip-scale package is 55 percent the size and 50 percent the thickness of the closest competitor. Moreover, the sensor operates from a 2.6 V supply voltage, providing significantly lower power consumption for portable devices. To make it even easier to evaluate and design-in the color sensor, Avago also offers a complete "plug and play" development kit that interfaces to a personal computer through a USB port.

Avago was the first company to offer a digital-output color sensor combining higher integration, ease-of-use, smaller size and lower power consumption. The ADJD-S312-CR999 product retains all of these features in a remarkably small chip-scale footprint and is supported with Avago's "all in one box" development kit to reduce design cycle time.
