Case Study: Hydrogen Peroxide Gas Decontamination Of Material Pass-Through (MPT) Room

Source: STERIS Corporation

The chamber has been designed for biodecontamination of non-heat resistant materials that are not in direct contact with the product produced in a clean room. The chamber is made of 316L Stainless Steel. It includes a glass panel and 4 Hypalon gloves, with 2 side swinging doors equipped with airtight inflatable gaskets using compressed air.

Equipment to be treated is brought in from a controlled environment (class 10,000 room) via mobile carts using the loading door. Alter the VHP 1000 cycle is complete, equipment is transferred to the class 1,000 room using the unloading door.

The chamber air handling includes fresh air supply through a HEPA filter, an exhaust via a HEPA filter and internal recirculation through HEPA filters. The air handling system is controlled by a Siemens PLC. Hydrogen peroxide gas is introduced in the M.R.T. room via short rigid PVC tubing connected to the air supply duct upstream of the chamber inlet HEPA filter. The gas returning to the VHP 1000 generator is piped from both recirculation ducts.

The VHP 1000 generator communicates with the Air Handling System (AHS)to actuate automated valves when required. For example, a signal is given to the generator on start-up once the AHS is in a closed loop configuration (air supply and exhaust sealed off). Once the VHP 1000 cycle is complete, the generator will send a signal to initiate the fresh air supply and air exhaust.
