Kaplan University Launches New Online Degree Programs

Davenport, IA - Kaplan University announced the introduction of several new online academic programs: a Bachelor of Science in Communication; a Bachelor of Science in Legal Studies; an Associate of Applied Science in Medical Assisting; an Associate of Applied Science in Medical Office Management; an Associate of Applied Science in Medical Transcription, a Corrections Certificate, and a Pathway to Paralegal Postbaccalaureate Certificate.

"These new programs reflect Kaplan University's commitment to keeping our curriculum fresh, challenging and career-oriented for our students," said Dr. David Harpool, Provost and Chief Operating Officer for Academics, Kaplan University.

The Bachelor of Science in Communication online degree program combines an interdisciplinary approach, using both theory and application to teach two separate emphasis areas—technical writing and organizational communication.

The Bachelor of Science in Legal Studies degree will provide students with an education that incorporates the study of law with the development of both practical and analytical skills. Appropriate for students interested in attending law school or graduate school, the degree focuses on teaching strong ethical reasoning, critical thinking, and research and communications skills.

The Associate of Applied Science in Medical Assisting degree program concentrates on helping students acquire knowledge and develop skills in performing laboratory, clinical and medical office procedures. In addition to the online program, students will complete a clinical mentorship and an externship program. Graduates may take the Certified Medical Assistant exam, given by the American Association of Medical Assistants; or the Registered Medical Assistant exam, offered by the American Medical Technologists.3

Students receiving an Applied Science in Medical Office Management will learn the necessary skills to keep a health care facility running smoothly. This program will teach the student how to be part of a team working with patient records, medical document and other medical office matters. In addition to the online program the student will complete an externship experience in a physicians' office or clinic. Graduates are eligible to take the Certified Medical Administrative Specialist examination, given by the American Medical Technologists.

The Associate of Applied Science in Medical Transcription will allow the student to turn doctors' daily dictation tapes into clear, concise, print and electronic documents in a timely, accurate, and confidential manner. Students in the online program must also complete an externship program. Graduates meeting the requirements of the American Association of Medical Transcription (AAMT) may sit for the Certified Medical Transcriptionist exam.

The Corrections Certificate program is intended to prepare students to succeed in entry-level and supervisory positions in correctional institutions and programs. The program may contribute toward meeting regulatory and continuing professional educational requirements, depending upon individual state requirements.

The Pathway to Paralegal Postbaccalaureate Certificate is intended for students who already have a bachelor degree and want to enter the paralegal profession. The 41-credit certificate is designed to provide the foundational coursework and legal skills necessary to enter the field.
