The EMC is the world's first portable cooling system that allows field operation of high-purity-germanium gamma ray detectors without liquid nitrogen cooling. A Stirling-cycle engine that features Constellation's proprietary noise cancellation algorithm powers the EMC. The EMC is relatively light, can operate from battery or AC power and can include an optional multi-channel analyzer (Constellation's "EMCA"). The EMC is designed to use Ortec's "PopTop" detector to allow the switching detectors without sending the EMC back to the factory.
