Recent Findings Show Vinegar Component Lethal To Mesothelioma Cells, According To Surviving Mesothelioma

A new study finds that the chemical compound that gives vinegar its distinctive smell and sour taste may eventually be used to help kills mesothelioma cells.

Raleigh, NC (PRWEB) - Doctors in Japan and Norway say acetic acid, the ingredient that makes up 3 to 5% of vinegar (the rest is water), had a lethal effect of mesothelioma cells and gastric cancer cells in recent laboratory tests. Scientists at the Kyoto GI Disease Research Center in Kyoto and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim added acetic acid to cell cultures of human and rat gastric cancers and two kinds of pleural mesothelioma cell lines.

According to lead researcher Dr. Susumu Okabe, “Acetic acid at 0.5% for 10 minutes induced almost complete cell death of ACC-MESO1 and MSTO-211H [mesothelioma cells].”

The new study, published in the Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology concludes that the topical application of acetic acid could be a “feasible approach” for treating gastric cancer and other malignancies such as mesothelioma.

“While it is always exciting to hear about new mesothelioma drug studies, it is especially encouraging when doctors find anti-mesothelioma properties in a compound that is already common and readily available, such as acetic acid,” says Surviving Mesothelioma’s Managing Editor, Alex Strauss.
