Quantachrome Instruments Is Pleased To Announce That Its Autosorb iQ Surface Area And Pore Size Analyzers Have Been Chosen To Equip The New NIST FACT

Quantachrome Instruments is pleased to announce that its Autosorb iQ surface area and pore size analyzers have been chosen to equip the new NIST (National Institute of Standards) FACT (Facility for Adsorbent Characterization and Testing) laboratory in Gaithersburg, Maryland, USA. Several of Quantachrome’s instruments will be utilized for FACT research , and training initiatives. FACT will utilize this instrumentation to establish a center of excellence for characterizing adsorbent materials. Optimizing performance of these materials are of growing strategic importance in America’s new energy initiatives. Quantachrome’s instrumentation allows scientists to understand the surface characteristics of advanced materials that impact their desired performance characteristics.

Quantachrome is very pleased that their instrumentation has been chosen to serve as the scientific backbone of FACT’s mission to further America’s energy independence through the creation and characterization of advanced materials. FACT’s mission is to create an epicenter of technology, skills, and expertise in material characterization to support America’s initiatives in advanced energy technologies. The FACT will support various DoE (Department of Energy) programs focusing on the development of adsorbent materials for carbon dioxide sequestration, hydrocarbon storage, and other applications. As a center of excellence it will collaborate with, and provide guidance to other government, academic, and commercial research groups operating in the arena of adsorption characterization of energy materials.

The Advanced Research Project Agency- Energy (ARPA-E) was created within the Department of Energy as part of the “The America Competes Act” of 2007. ARPA-E’s mission is to decrease US dependence on foreign energy sources, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve energy efficiency, and to ensure that the US maintains technological leadership in advanced energy technologies. The mission of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (founded in 1901) is to promote U.S. innovation and industrial competitiveness by advancing measurement science, standards, and technology. NIST focuses in measurement science, information technology, neutron research, and nanoscale materials.

FACT is an interagency collaboration between NIST (National Institute of Standards) and ARPA-E (The Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy).

FACT will serve as an independent facility for accurate and reproducible characterization of gas sorption properties. It will establish state-of-the-art testing procedures, develop reference materials for adsorbent material testing , create an online data base of adsorbent material properties and serve as an impartial testing and validation facility.
