While real-time viable particle counters offer significant potential benefits, they also present some new challenges to industry and regulators. This article will address the unique challenges associated with evaluating, testing, and validating this new family of RMM instruments.
During the 1990s, many types of operations requiring aseptic conditions were moved from clean rooms into sophisticated glove boxes or isolators. In the pharmaceutical industry, both quality control testing and manufacturing processes have employed isolation technology.
A customer approached BTL with a product that was being freeze-dried. Their current cycle duration was 64 hours, which they wanted to be reduced to increase throughput. FDM, DTA, and impedance analysis was proposed to ascertain the lyophilisation and frozen state behaviour of the product, which could then be used to improve the cycle.
Optical particle counters (OPC) utilize light illumination and extinction to determine the presence, size, number, and/or concentration of particles. Particles are typically suspended in a fluid or air, which flow through the volume that is illuminated and viewed by the detection system.
