Cerner To Exhibit LIMS At Clinical Lab Management Conference

Cerner Corp. (Kansas City, MO) will display its PathNet laboratory information management system (LIMS) at the annual conference of the Clinical Laboratory Management Association (CLMA; Dallas, TX; June 16–20, 1999). Clinical labs have used Cerner's PathNet LIMS for nearly 20 years—two versions will be demonstrated during the conference.

Streamlining information delivery has become a critical issue for clinical laboratory managers across the country recently, due to capitation, reduced Medicare reimbursements, and laboratory consolidations. These situations have increased the number of billable tests that are performed at the same time that the amount of revenue generated from each test has decreased.

"With all the changes in reimbursement these days, lab managers simply must plan and justify every dollar they spend," says Paula Labart, laboratory information systems manager at St. Luke's Hospital (Kansas City, MO). "Using these LIMS tools, I can determine how much business we can add and when, what kind of additional system resources we'll need, and even how well the lab is performing."

In 1998, the three labs in St. Luke's health system performed 1.7 million billable tests. By the year 2000, Labart says, a single database will harbor the information generated by nearly 2 million tests.

Cerner Corp. supplies clinical and management information and knowledge systems to more than 1,000 health care organizations around the world. Cerner has implemented HNA Classic PathNet LIMS at over 600 sites throughout the US and Canada.
